Maunuhanga was founded in 2021 to build a community and represent the interests of postdocs and other early career researchers at Victoria University of Wellington. The society has since expanded to include researchers from Research Institutes across the entire Wellington region. As well as advocating for its members, the society runs professional development and social events.

The society extends its membership to all early career researchers who have recently completed or are about to complete their PhDs, and who currently hold any type of fixed-term or permanent appointment. This includes researchers at the University and its associated institutes, as well as those affiliated with other organisations in Wellington, regardless of their field of study.
